You loved it – you couldn’t really afford it but you bought it anyway, so you might as well get the most wear you can out of your lovely new bag! Whether it is a Prada, Louis Vitton, Hermes, Radley or Marks & Spencer here are a couple of quick tips for keeping your bag in tip top condition.
1. USE A HANDBAG HANGER. There are more germs and dirt on the bottom of most handbags than in a toilet bowl – so as well as being good for hygiene and preventing stomach bugs (after chucking it on the toilet floor, restaurant or bar floor, office floor – where does it go in your house? Kitchen surface? Dining Table?) the trusty handbag hanger also prevents scuffs and scrapes on the bottom of your bag.
2. A little care and attention. When you change your bag over or once a week if using the same bag – wipe over with a (slightly) damp cloth for manmade bags – or use a little leather polish on a dry cloth and buff up well. In the case of suede bags – a quick once over with a suede brush will bring it up nicely. Any of these might take 2 or 3 minutes – so its not a big deal.
3. STORAGE. There’s no point taking care not to damage your bags and keep them in nice condition if you throw them in the bottom of the wardrobe between uses. Keep them on a shelf in a bag – most bags nowadays come with a dust bag – if not you can make your own out of white (not yellow) dusters loosely stitched together. Better that a bag is a box – either cardboard or preferably plastic (so you can see whats in it). Make sure you keep the silica gel sachets that come in new handbags and keep them in the boxes to prevent moisture damage.
4. Final tip – get stuffed!! If you put foam, or crumpled paper (again I prefer white or quality brown to newspaper – as the print can dirty pale interiors), into your bags when not in use they will keep their beautiful shapes.
It doesn’t take long to look after your bags. If you do you will get years more use out of them.
